GOLDEN
DISCOGRAPHY
NOW AVAILABLE ON CD & VINYL
Before Extra Golden, there was Golden, a
group that Alex and Ian formed with Philip Manley and Jon Theodore in
Oberlin, Ohio way back in 1993. For ten years, the band survived the
multiple relocations of its members and their prodigious amount of
work with various other projects to release four full-length albums
and a handful of singles and EPs. However, while Golden’s members
have followed divergent musical paths since, it is clear that Alex and
Ian weren’t the only ones that helped the group live up to its name.
Philip Manley, best known for his work with fellow Thrill Jockey
recording artists Trans Am, is
a talented recording engineer who also plays with The
Fucking Champs. Drummer Jon Theodore is recognized the world over
for his velvety verbiage and his years spent with The
Mars Volta, as well as Royal
Trux.
Due to the nature of the independent record
“business”, Golden’s best recordings have been practically
unavailable for years. Music enthusiasts shall fret no longer. Extra
Golden Dot Kom is pleased to offer sealed copies of these hard-to-find
gems at very affordable prices. |

GOLDEN S/T CD only, 1997, $13
Released in 1997 on Germany’s Trans Solar label, Golden’s first full-length is comprised mostly of dynamic, instrumental rock written in the years prior to its release. Highlights include the lowbrow funk of “Known To Be Nice” and the future live staple, “Mafi Mingi”, whose insistent rhythm, winding guitars and canned Malian applause stand as a signpost for the group’s future musical direction.

SUPER GOLDEN ORIGINAL MOVEMENT CD/LP, 1999, $13
This was Golden’s second full-length and their first for Washington, DC’s now-defunct Slowdime Records. Though recorded exactly one year after the group’s self-titled debut, it wasn’t released until the spring of 1999. This time around, variety is in the air. If anyone ever asks, “What do Black Sabbath, benga and Lalo Schifrin have in common?”, this album may be a good response.

GOLDEN SUMMER CD/LP, 2000, $13
Recorded in the summer of 1999 and released the following year, Golden’s third full-length marked the end of Slowdime (coincidence?). From the original press release: “… while "Golden Summer" does feature a wide range of new rhythms - from the Sisyphean drive of "Recital (Spindac Volare)" to the pensive guitar syncopations of "Army Worms" - it is not at the expense of the group's trademark synthesis of blues rock and equator sounds. Witness "Executive Outcomes", a purely Gibbonsonian flight over a mourning Bamako. Or the monolithic majesty of "Golden", a monument to melodic rhythm that stands as tall as the obelisk at Axum.”

APOLLO STARS CD/LP, 2002, $13
Golden’s fourth and final album was released in the summer of 2002 and represents the group at its most assured. Dancefloor funk (“Feel This Flow”), ballads (“Ma Petite Est Mariee”) and lowdown grooves (“The Other Side of the Sun”) culminate in Golden’s final, triumphant ride into the sunset (“Nikki”). For fans of Extra Golden, this may be the best place to start.

GOLDEN AND RHYTHM-BEAT JAZZ 12" only, 1999, OUT OF STOCK
Produced in between Super Golden Original Movement and Golden Summer, this extremely limited edition 12” finds the group exploring extended grooves - these two tracks combine for over 20 minutes of music – while incorporating a horn section. DEEP SKILLS/VIOLATOR 7", 1999, $5
Golden tickled eardrums as well as funny bones when they released this 7-inch single whose two tracks are so good that neither could be called a B-side. “Deep Skills” mimics contemporary R&B, while “Violator” is a tribute to Eliminator-era ZZ Top – complete with drum machine! Limited copies remain.
